O Friday, how I love thee...

I don't know why, but this seemed like an especially long week. I guess without the immediate threat of a triathlon looming in front of me, I've refocused on how much my job is stressing me out. I'm trying to focus on the duathlon, but the running/riding thing just isn't as worrisome as the swimming thing. Anyway, I went swimming this AM and it felt really good. Had the pool to myself for a good half an hour so I just did laps-nice and slow and relaxed. Hey! Did you guys see the video with the right whale that breached right on top of a sailboat? How bizarre was that? What are the odds? Sorry for the non sequitor, but I kept thinking about that whale this morning as I was swimming in the pool. You're right, Pats. Swimming can be incredibly boring. Well, it's going to be a scorcher here in NYC this weekend so I don't know if I'll make it out to run. I'll try to drag myself out of bed super early and hit the streets--have a great weekend and good luck to Kip in the 5K! We'll be expecting a full race report from you on Monday m...!

  1. You can break up the monotony by using the kick board and the pulling bouy things (those floaty white figure 8 shaped things that you put in between your legs so you're arms have to do all the work). So, swim a few laps, do a lap with the kick board, swim a few laps, do a lap with the bouy . . . Anything helps! I'm glad you're still at the swimming. When is your Du?

  2. Hi! Thanks a lot for the good wishes for Kip. I know he'll do great, because he's pretty strong-willed. I just hope his foot won't play tricks on him. I promise a full report tomorrow. Your swimming reports are killing me, hehe. I love swimming but I still don't have my swimming pass because I haven't been to get my doctor's report that I need for this pass. grrr.

I agree with Pats, swimming can be boring but so can running. It depends on how you arrange your workouts. I normally get online workouts because I prefer it when others tell me what to do; it's like an extra-motivation thing. So yeah, you need to change styles and speeds and also incorporate boards and pull bouys for sure. Also to work on your form. When I did my swimming routines, my preferred sequence was free-style warm ups -- some style with kick board (depending on the laps I was doing, it could be mixed -- in any case, I hate to use the kick board for free style, although I like it very much for breast stroke and for back stroke) -- arms workout with the help of the pull buoy (i used to hate breast stroke -- sometimes it's better to do breastroke arms combined with freestyle legs) --then I switched to a more intense free style or breast stroke (whatever style the generating workout thing told me to do) -- one more intense series of either free style or breast stroke (sometimes it could also be back stroke) -- sometimes this second intense series was turned into a series of freestyle sprints, which I really enjoyed --- then a cool down series (any style, although back stroke is particularly nice at this stage)

Anyway, this change of pace can make swimming more enjoyable, in my opinion.

    have fun!
